Your budget game might be reasonably good but BAM, you just got invited to a string of weddings. There’s a birthday party [or two] and now your best friends are all planning a weekend away together. 🫠🫠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our best attempts at a budget often leave us caught out at these times.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These are not really considered emergency expenses so it’s understandable that we overlook allowing for them in our day-to-day budget. These little unplanned surprises can bring the best financial budgets and goals unstuck… but not to sweat. My money tip is to create a separate account for these that is separate to an emergency fund [an emergency might look like a new washing machine right up to time out of employment; hens weekend? Not so much]. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have a best guess at things that might come up during the year and squirrel away some savings for them; think Christmas, birthdays/weddings/ baby showers and yes a girls trip… or two if we’re lucky. 🤞🤞

That big, dreaded word that makes the hair on the back of our neck stand up when we hear it, ‘inflation’.

So what is it exactly?

Inflation also referred to as ‘cost of living’ and CPI (consumer price index), is a percentage measure of all the goods and services we consume each year. And over the history of time, the cost of living has gone up 2-3% per annum.

Inflation can be described as the increase in the level of prices of the goods and services that households buy. In other words, it’s the measure of the purchasing power of your money.

The history of your purchasing power:

⚡️ Your purchasing power of $100 in 1967 is equivalent to $846.34 in 2024.

⚡️ Your purchasing power of $100 in 1984 is equivalent to $275.37 in 2024.

⚡️ Your purchasing power of $100 in 2004 is equivalent to $164.53 in 2024.

⚡️ Your purchasing power of $100 in 2014 is equivalent to $125.09 in 2024.

Inflation usually sits between 2-3% per annum, so effectively your money is losing 2-3% purchasing power per year.

I want to reassure you that none of us have an innate ability to manage money; it is a skill we learn whether that is via experience or gaining knowledge and to extend on this idea?

Money management is about actions performed daily, and these actions are a product of our habits and our behaviours.

An offset account is linked to your home loan, and the money in it is used to reduce the loan balance that you pay interest on. This means you end up paying interest on a smaller amount, saving you money every month. For example, if your home loan is $200,000 and you have $2,000 in your offset account, you'll only pay interest on $198,000.

💛 Pay Off Your Loan Faster

Since your monthly instalments stay the same, the savings on interest allow you to reduce the principal of your loan more quickly. This can help you pay off your home loan faster than you would with a standard loan setup.

💛 Better potential return than just saving

Typically the interest on a home loan will be a higher rate than any accessible savings account. Therefore, your dollar will be working ’smarter' for you in offset than just saving. Depending on your tax situation this kicker can be even greater due to interest earned on a savings account being taxable, reducing your return. Where as reduced interest payable on your loan won’t impact your tax position.

💛 Flexibility and Convenience

You can use your offset account like an everyday account. Have your salary deposited directly into it, so every dollar helps reduce your loan cost. If you receive a large sum of money, you can also deposit it into your offset account, provided it doesn’t exceed your loan balance.

💛 Funds Ready for the next home deposit

If you are thinking of upscaling your home or planning a renovation, you can save towards it in your offset, reducing your loan interest and having the funds readily available for the next purchase.

This is your reminder that wealth isn’t defined by owning designer bags or luxury cars, flying first class to Europe or how big your home/s are.

While society often paints wealth (and financial success) as luxury holidays and designer items, true wealth is a richer tapestry. We need to remember it's deeply personal and multifaceted, and in my opinion, nothing to do with material possessions.

I believe that wealth is about having the freedom to pursue your passions and shape your life on your own terms. I believe in balance too, being able to enjoy your lifestyle now, while also building a solid foundation for the future. It shouldn’t be all work and no pleasure either, work out what’s most important and build your plan to incorporate this. Whether it be spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies that light you up or contributing to causes that align with your values.

That's why setting goals tailored to your personal aspirations is vital. Because financial success isn't a one-size-fits-all concept—it means different things to different people. By defining what wealth, financial security and financial success means to you, you can start to build your plan and pave the way for a journey toward both financial and personal fulfilment.
