Yes, it’s not the nicest topic to discuss but it’s something we MUST talk about. Estate planning is more than just a will, it’s thinking about how your children are cared for, by whom and deciding who has the power to make decision on your behalf should you become incapacitated. The biggest driver behind building my own boutique

The biggest driver behind building my own boutique financial advice business was to provide practical financial advice. I’m a talker. I’m a people person. I enjoy helping people without all the demands and targets, particularly those of helping a large organisation meet their bottom line. I wanted to focus on the people who I serve and their goals and desires. I wanted to do money differently.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

After 15 years of working on plans and putting out financial fires [including my own - yes, been there done that] I realised we need to step away from “financial freedom” first and start investing in our client’s financial wellbeing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Getting better at money has got to be in the top five of most of our “to-do” lists. As a finance professional I know I see an influx of enquiries for my one-to-one services in January and again around the end of financial year BUT in all honesty the best time to start is… NOW! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ll let you in on a “trick” of mine: micro actions. It might seem a bit “buzz wordy” but taking small steps to reach small goals makes taking those big steps and reaching those big goals a whole lot easier.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Often we set these big, lofty goals with our finances, let’s say it’s saving for a home deposit. Practically, it could take two/three/ four/SEVEN years to achieve this and along the way, we constantly feel disheartened that we’re not there yet or that the day will never come. It’s really easy to sabotage something that feels beyond our reach.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Solution: Have your big picture vision but set mini milestones; I find six months is a really good timeframe to keep you motivated.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Break the goal into small increments and work out what you need to do each pay to get you there. Say, for example, the goal is to save 12k this year and you get paid monthly - you’ll need to save $1k/month so set yourself a 6 month target to get your $6k in the bank. I don’t know about you but $6k in 6 months sounds more reasonable and achievable than $12k by the end of the year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My loves. Like seriously, I’m sure, never in any

My loves. Like seriously, I’m sure, never in any of our wildest dreams did we think we’d be parenting through lockdowns and a health crisis like the one we’re in and whilst the juggle has been real [very real on some days], having a precious morning like we did today are the moments that I cherish for our little family. Standing still with them, away from the busyness, it’s given us time we might not have had.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The background to this, this morning I knew I had to put work on hold and spend a few hours, in nature and near water, with ‘us’ just enjoying the little things. The truth is I'm really good at seeing the positives in almost every situation, I’m the upbeat optimist 99% of the time. But I’ve found myself struggling lately to stay upbeat and haven’t been able to show up much here because I’ve needed to preserve all my energy to keep my little family ticking over and to keep helping my beautiful clients.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know that so many of us are also frightened to share how rough (the world’s longest) lockdown is treating us because there are always causes and struggles much bigger than our own. But I thought sharing a little one of my own #truthbombs wouldn’t hurt. We are just human, not superhuman, at the end of the day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So if I can indulge a little, boy am I missing the rest of my family (in regional Vic) terribly, my friends, a belly laugh, holidays, a meal out, going to the gym, a haircut, a massage, even a mindless trip to the shops. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And while there’s so much I'm missing, like many of us, a morning like today is what it took to remind me of the million things I’m grateful for and appreciate. How lucky.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Considering extending the life of your loan? Read this first because I hate to say it but… it could be a trap.
As you might already know, reviewing your home loans every couple of years to make sure you’re getting the best interest rate going and the best product for your circumstance is a really valuable exercise.
Often, when we find that better rate we find our self in the position of refinancing and get really excited when our mortgage broker tells us we’re going to save x amount of dollars per month. But…… what terms are you repaying?
A quick ‘for example’:
Let’s say I was already 3 years into paying down the 30 year loan and I refinance my mortgage to get a better interest rate. I’m turning cartwheels saving 1% and I’ll be saving $400 a month on my repayments. Here’s the thing, I just took out ANOTHER 30 year loan when I only had 27 years left on my previous loan, so some of the repayment savings I’m excited about are because I’m spreading the loan over 30 year term. Yup, I just added another 3 years of time to repaying my loan.
Here’s the main tips to avoid this situation. Make sure you are comparing the repayment of the new loan to the same remaining term. Even better, use the savings you make to pay more off the new loan and work out how much sooner you should be out of debt.
It pays to do your research and ask all the questions of your mortgage broker when you’re looking to refinance, just be sure to find someone who is working for you, not the bank but that; a whole other post.
